Triggerman

Brand New Day

Independent

Release date: out now

Review by David Norris

Does anyone else see the irony that so many of the best heavy Southern Rock bands worth their weight are coming from the United Kingdom? TRIGGERMAN is no exception with their new album Brand New Day delivering a bunch of booze-filled swagger of down-tuned riffs that stand up with the cream of the crop as they a blend the stylings of CLUTCH and ORANGE GOBLIN.  The  seven track album could actually be referred to as the soundtrack to the yet to be released documentary on the band with the same name, which is said to explore the creation process of the last twelve months of the band, as well as featuring their performance from the 2010 Glasgowbury festival.Opening track The Riff Holds Sway is the perfect introduction to the album as lead singer/guitarist Bap growls about the importance of a guitar riff with the chorus of “Can you hear it, can you feel it? At the end of the day, the riff holds sway”.  This theory not only applies to nearly all great rock bands, regardless of genre but is clearly the developing thesis behind the band's song writing process. Title track Brand New Day is yet another tune which subscribes to the aforementioned thesis.  Driven by the drums and dirty sounding bass throughout the most part, the song climaxes at the chorus of “Hey! Hey! It's a band new day!” as the guitars and bass play one of the chunkiest riffs known to man.

I'd feel amiss if I failed to mention the guitar solos.  Between all the chunky riffs and solid drum beats, lead guitarist Niall's love of his wah pedal is quite apparent and for good reason.  He's able to use this effect to it's full potential which provides a gravelly, and at times warbley sound which feels right at home in this brand of Southern Rock.

If I was writing a live review, I'd have little doubt that I'd be endlessly singing the praises of TRIGGERMAN but as it's an album review and the sign of a truly great album is the band's ability to not only write great songs but their ability to create a collection of songs which compliment each other.  TRIGGERMAN has one mode: non-stop high energy rock with the downside being that by the end of the album, the reality crystallises that there is such a thing as 'too much of a good thing'.
