Review by Robyn Morrison
MESSAGE TO VENUS is a four piece rock band from San Juan/Miami and they’ve not long released their second studio CD titled The Envelope. There are five tracks to this album and it kick starts with The Show. The opening bars begin with an almost outer space feel and I thought that this was going to be more ambient than what it was. The Show is a radio friendly track which delivers crescendos of light and dark.
The second track, Universal You promises a big rock sound before it takes it down a tad in the verse where the vocals are the leading feature. It’s stepped up a bit in the chorus before it returns to the softer style evident in the beginning of the song. Just when you think this track is going to be a middle of the road song, MESSAGE TO VENUS changes it up a bit by ripping out some raunchy guitar riffs. There are so many styles going on in this song but somehow it works.
Stripped, the third track is a cover of the DEPECHE MODE classic. The vocal delivery is brooding and sexy. It’s definitely a song to woo your lover to and they do a mighty fine version of this song.
The final two tracks on the album, Change and To Smile are the moodier tracks on the EP. It’s a nice way to finish the EP and moves away from the more commercial sound of the first three tracks. To Smile sounds as though it’s been written from a deeply personal place. The acoustic guitar compliments the sorrow in the vocals. It’s definitely the stand out track on the EP because not only is it a well written song but it shows the band’s diversity.
This EP is definitely one to pick up if you like straight up rock laced with some broody moments.
